Taroudannt and around

Taroudant AgadirWith its majestic, tawny-brown circuit of walls, TAROUDANNT is one of the most elegant towns in Morocco. It’s a friendly, laid-back sort of place, with all the good-natured bustle of a Berber market town and it’s a good base for trekking into the Western High Atlas or the Djebel Sirwa as well as for two superb road routes – north over the Tizi n’Test to Marrakech, and south to Tata (see p.641), Foum el Hassan and beyond.

Taroudannt’s position at the heart of the fertile Souss Valley has always given it a commercial and political importance but it never became an “imperial city”. Even the Saadians, who made Taroudannt their capital in the sixteenth century (and built most of its circuit of walls), moved on to Marrakech. The town’s present status, as a major market centre with a population of around 60,000, is probably much as it always has been.
